Dresdner Stollenfest - The Christmas highlight of the Saxon Capital

Its the time of the year for the Dresdner Stollenfest

At the Stollenfest, Dresden’s bakers and pastry makers celebrate their Dresdner Christstollen® along with hundreds of thousands of guests from all over the world. It is already a tradition: on the Saturday before the second Sunday of Advent, the city pays homage to the popular Christmas delicacy with a giant stollen. A festive stage programme, visiting VIPs and, last but not least, a colourful parade of over 500 people create a unique atmosphere to suit a one-of-a-kind festival.

On its way through the historical Old Town, the festive Dresdner Stollen, weighing several tonnes, is accompanied by the Dresden Stollen Girl, the city’s bakers and pastry makers, marching bands, regiments of soldiers and numerous other participants.

The parade route stretches from Schloßplatz past the city’s loveliest sights to the Striezelmarkt. The giant cake is cut into thousands of pieces with the Stollen knife (itself weighing twelve kilos and 1.6 metres in length), then sold to people at the festival. The Stollen Association (Schutzverband Dresdner Stollen e.V.) donates most of the proceeds to a charity and to support the upcoming generation of young bakers.
